Signs of aluminum wiring in your home:
A Bit of History...
In North America, aluminum wire was used in residential construction for a short time from 1960's to the mid-1970's when copper prices were very high. Copper and aluminum expand and contract differently at different temperatures, so as heat is transferred through electricity, this expansion/contraction difference will cause the wires and connectors to loosen. Over time, loose connections will arc, and arcs are a serious fire hazard.
Since the mid-1970's, aluminum wiring was abandoned by the electrical industry due to copper's stability. As such, electrical devices today such as outlets, switches, lighting, fans, etc. are NOT compatible with aluminum wiring.
Save on Your Home Insurance
Insurance companies charge a premium for homes with aluminum wiring. By replacing your home's aluminum wiring and aluminum electrical devices, First Aid Electric electricians will issue a letter to your insurance company to reduce your insurance rates.
