Best thermostat temperatures

When it comes to thermostat temperature settings, people fall into one of two categories - those who set the thermostat at one temperature and leave it, and those who don’t. Then there are logical and/or emotional reasons why theirs is the ideal thermostat temperature. And so the battle of the thermostat begins.

To encourage home peace ;), here are what experts have to say about recommended thermostat settings. It might not end the thermostat skirmishes in your home, but at least you’ll be armed with information about the ideal thermostat temperatures.

What temperature should my house be?
Or better yet, “What is the most energy saving temperature to set my thermostat at?” Experts say that the ideal home temperature should be in between 20 to 26 degrees Celsius. To maximize energy efficiency, turning your thermostat up or down by 5 degrees while you’re away from your home can help reduce your heating and cooling costs.

What is the best temperature for an empty house?
If you’re leaving for a long vacation in the spring, summer or fall, it’s best to turn off your heat/cooling system if you don’t have anything in your home that would be at risk of overheating or freezing, i.e. plants, water pipes, technology items that are temperature-sensitive. However, in the winter, consider setting it between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius without worrying about your pipes freezing.

Will turning my thermostat down/up while I’m away make it work harder and be less efficient once it goes back to its original temperature when I'm home?
No! According to the Department of Energy, your cooling or heating appliance will work just the same amount to bring it back to its original temperature once you’re home again.

Do you want more functionality with your home's thermostat? There are many thermostat options on the market today, including some very technologically cool ones!
Thermostat installation
Manual Thermostats
They allow you to change the temperature from each wall unit in your home. There are usually one or two manual thermostats in a house.
  • Uncomplicated and the temperature you set it at is what it’s left as - great for those who are not tech-savvy.
  • Most commonly used thermostat model in homes.

Programmable Thermostats
If you want to make a change that can quickly lower your home's heating and cooling costs, install a programmable thermostat.
  • Work for both heating and cooling.
  • Rather than manually changing the settings multiple times a day, you can set the automated thermostat once for the household’s daily or weekly needs.
  • Programmable thermostats eliminate guesswork. No more worrying about remembering to turn down that heat or air conditioning before you walk out the door.

Smart thermostat installation
Smart Thermostats
If you’re looking to achieve maximum programmable thermostat savings, you might want to consider investing in a "smart" thermostat that is connected to your home’s wifi.

When you install a smart thermostat, you’re able to control the temperature settings from your smartphone or other connected device which makes life easier and your home more energy efficient.
  • Program your smart thermostat so that it will adjust the temperature before you arrive home on a daily basis, once you’ve gone to bed, when you wake up, and so on — no more having to climb out of bed because you forgot to adjust the thermostat!
  • Energy efficiency can happen even if you are on the go, travel frequently or live in an extreme climate.
  • No worries about your house being too warm or too cold during the hours you’re at work. You can set it to be the optimal temperature for saving money on energy costs, but still be perfectly comfortable when you arrive home.
  • It can provide you with information about how you use energy, and how you could potentially use less. Some models connect to apps that offer data that indicates your usage per month, how many units of energy are being spent on heating or air conditioning, and how your month compares against prior time periods.

As we continue to self-isolate and the days begin to get shorter, extend your backyard enjoyment with a breezy patio and a beautifully lit yard. Here are some suggestions.

Outdoor lighting
Outdoor ceiling fans
Keep mosquitoes at bay on your patio with outdoor ceiling fans. Also excellent for cooling you off.

Tree-mounted uplights and downlights
Uplight trees or bushes in your landscape design. These lights are secured at the base of your landscape feature and create a spotlight that shines upwards. Or, select downlights to create a moonlight effect around trees and tall bushes. These lights are installed high in the trees, facing downwards, creating a spotlight below.

Flood lights
Used primarily for safety, these are commonly used for lighting walkways and other darkened outdoor areas that are frequently used by you and your family. Floodlights provide convenient lighting, create a safe walkway, and can offer great curb appeal for your home’s exterior.

Outdoor wall lights
These lights hang on the exterior walls of your home, pergola or fence to highlight certain architectural features. There is a wide range of outdoor wall lights to choose from, ranging from traditional to modern. We recommend using different wattage to create more interest in your nighttime landscaping.

Post lights
If you're looking for instant curb appeal then post lights are a must to show visitors the way to your front door.
